_Randall Packer/Ken Jordan____Multimedia: From Wagner to Virtual Reality

[W. W. Norton & Company_2001]

The first book to address the true history of computer-based multimedia. Web sites, dosage CD-ROMs, video games, interactive television, virtual reality, touch-screen kiosks, 3D architecture design programs . . . these and other forms of computer-based multimedia will be as important to the twenty-first century as film and television were to the twentieth. But what is multimedia, where did it come from, and how does it work? Multimedia presents the fascinating dialogue between the arts and sciences over the last half-century that made today’s multimedia possible. Scientists like Vannevar Bush, Douglas Englebart, Norbert Wiener; artists like John Cage, Nam June Paik, and William Gibson–their groundbreaking visions are brought together here for the first time, given historical context, and embedded in a clear explanation of the core concepts behind multimedia. Multimedia will be required reading for anyone who has built a Web site, studied computer graphics, or wondered at the rapid birth and evolution of the new media now changing every aspect of our lives. Introduction by William Gibson.

_Carole Pateman____Ženski nered : demokracija, feminizam i politička teorija

10). Autorica sa jednakom oštrinom i preciznošću analizira i kritički promišlja kako liberalno-demokratske koncepcije političkog, onog što ona naziva i “bratskim društvenim ugovorom” tako i neke feminističke teorijske pristupe, ali i pitanja feminističke prakse. Ova knjiga pomaže nam u mnogome uvid u povijesne i teorijske uzroke patrijarhalnog društva. Modifikaciju patrijarhata u modernoj demokraciji, koju autorica naziva “liberalno-patrijarhalna demokracija”, vidi u građanskom društvu i u njemu utemeljenom poimanju rada.

_Paul Patton____Deleuze and the Political (Thinking the Political)

[Routledge_2000]

While Gilles Deleuze is hailed as on of the most influential thinkers in the twentieth century and a key figure in poststructuralist thought, the impact of his work on political theory and the challenges it presents has received remarkably little attention. Deleuze and the Political provides the first full-length overview of Deleuze’s relation to political thought, as well as an accessible and fascinating introduction to some of the key themes in his work. Paul Patton explores the full range of Deleuze’s work, interweaving motifs that extend from his early writings, such as Nietzsche and Philosophy, to the more recent What is Philosophy? and major texts such as Anti-Oedipus and Difference and Repetition. Throughout, Patton demonstrates Deleuze’s relevance to theoretical and practical concerns in disciplines as diverse as philosophy, political theory, sociology, history, and cultural studies.

_Philip Pettit____Republicanism : A Theory of Freedom and Government

[Oxford University Press, USA_2000]

This is the first full-length presentation of a republican alternative to the liberal and communitarian theories that have dominated political philosophy in recent years. The latest addition to the acclaimed Oxford Political Theory series, Pettit’s eloquent and compelling account opens with
an examination of the traditional republican conception of freedom as non-domination, contrasting this with established negative and positive views of liberty.

The first part of the book traces the rise and decline of this conception, displays its many attractions, and makes a case for why it should still be regarded as a central political ideal. The second part of the book looks at what the implementation of the ideal would require with regard to
substantive policy-making, constitutional and democratic design, regulatory control and the relation between state and civil society. Prominent in this account is a novel concept of democracy, under which government is exposed to systematic contestation, and a vision of state-societal relations
founded upon civility and trust.

Pettit’s powerful and insightful new work offers not only a unified, theoretical overview of the many strands of republican ideas, but also a new and sophisticated perspective on studies in related fields including the history of ideas, jurisprudence, and criminology.

_Dominic Pettman____Love and Other Technologies: Retrofitting Eros for the Information Age

[Fordham University Press_2006]

Can love really be considered another form of technology?Dominic Pettman says it can—although not before carefully redefining technology as a cultural challenge to what we mean by the “human” in the information age. Using the writings of such important thinkers as Giorgio Agamben, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Bernard Stiegler as a springboard, Pettman explores the “techtonic” movements of contemporary culture, specifically in relation to the language of eros. Highly ritualized expressions of desire—love, in other words—always reveal an era’s attitude toward what it means to exist as a self among others. For Pettman, the articulation of love is a technique of belonging: a way of responding to the basic plurality of everyone’s identity, a process that becomes increasingly complex as the forms of mediated communication, from cell phone and text messaging to the mass media, multiply and mesh together.Wresting the idea of love from the arthritic hands of Romanticism, Pettman demonstrates the ways in which this dynamic assemblage—”the stirrings of the soul”—have always been a matter of tools, devices, prosthetics, and media. Love is, after all, something we make. And, love, this book argues, is not eternal, but external.

_Dave Phillips____Linux Music & Sound

[No Starch Press_2000]

One of Linux’s chief attractions always has been the wealth of fun toys that are available to its users. For people who like to play with shaky software that’s emerging from some hacker’s brain, the open-source operating system has no peer. The Book of Linux Music & Sound explores one of Linux’s rougher facets and the software that’s emerged to enable audiophiles to combine their interests in sound and Linux. The book is primarily a survey of what’s out there, and one might conclude that a careful scan of Linux software archives and some attention to documentation files would reveal most of what Dave Phillips covers in these pages. That’s probably true, but Phillips (who includes most of the software he talks about in the book on the companion CD-ROM) has done a service to readers by saving them the trouble of tracking down the information themselves, and providing also informed criticism of the software.
Coverage of a given software package–and Phillips documents several score of them–typically begins with a data capsule that explains where to go for the latest version, and some instructions on how to install it. From there, he explains how to use the program. The form of this coverage varies, for obvious reasons, among the packages that he covers. However, it’s rather deep universally, and reflects his honest understanding of what each program is good for and how it fits with other software. Taken in concert with his instructions on how to set up and configure (in both hardware and software) Linux machines for audio work, this book is a fine resource for Linux users who have an interest in sound. –David Wall
Topics covered: The state of the art in Linux audio, including the native capabilities of the operating system, and (especially) Linux software for sound and music work. The book has a well-annotated catalog of Linux software, including WAV file recorders and editors, MIDI editors, MP3 utilities, synthesizers (both real-time and otherwise), and music notation programs. A special section deals with software for DJs who are interested in using Linux to generate techno, hip-hop, and house music.

_Frank Popper____Art of the Electronic Age

[Thames & Hudson_1997]

Highly successful and critically acclaimed, Art of the Electronic Age surveys the extraordinary artistic experimentation of the past twenty-five years and features work by such artists as Christo, Jenny Holzer, Nam June Paik, and Bill Viola. Frank Popper reveals the trends that have emerged from unprecedented innovations in technology: laser and holographic art; video, computer, and communication art; and installation, demonstration, and performance art. Illustrating his text with superb color reproductions, Popper demonstrates that this work did not emerge out of the blue, but clearly evolved from the art that preceded it. Although artists in the electronic age are experimenting with ways and means undreamed of even fifty years ago, their objective is the same as that of artists since antiquity–to create a shared aesthetic experience.

_Karl Popper____Nedovršena potraga

[Algoritam_2004]

_Moishe Postone/Eric L. Santner____Catastrophe and Meaning: The Holocaust and the Twentieth Century

[University Of Chicago Press_2003]

How should we understand the relation of the Holocaust to the broader historical processes of the century just ended? How do we explain the bearing of the Holocaust on problems of representation, memory, memorialization, and historical practice? These are some of the questions explored by an esteemed group of scholars in Catastrophe and Meaning, the most significant multiauthored book on the Holocaust in over a decade.

This collection features essays that consider the role of anti-Semitism in the recounting of the Holocaust; the place of the catastrophe in the narrative of twentieth-century history; the questions of agency and victimhood that the Holocaust inspires; the afterlife of trauma in literature written about the tragedy; and the gaps in remembrance and comprehension that normal historical works fail to notice.

_John Protevi____Political Physics: Deleuze, Derrida, and the Body Politic

[Athlone Press_2001]

Political Physics crosses the work of two of the most influential thinkers at the start of the 21st Century, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze. The book takes the reader on a transversal journey – employing Derridean analysis of the history of philosophy, Deleuzian creative dialogue and complexity theory – to cross the boundaries of philosophy and science.
Political Physics opens with Derridean readings of the ‘forceful body politic’ in Husserl, Hegel, ‘the gift of life’, and AIDS. Here, Derrida’s concern with metaphysics is developed alongside Deleuze’s critique of ‘hylomorphism’ – the doctrine that production is the imposition of order on chaos. The second part of the book presents Derridean readings for the Deleuzian concept of the ‘organ-ized body politic’ in Plato, Aristotle, Heidegger and Kant. Political Physics opens a new future for philosophy by revealing the way complexity theory shows the order and creativty inherent in matter itself.

_Todd Purgason/Bonnie Blake/Phil Scott/Brian Drake____Flash deConstruction: The Process, Design, and ActionScript of Juxt Interactive

[New Riders Press_2001]

If you’re looking for a book to help you climb the Flash learning curve, this is not it. If you need help navigating the Flash interface or learning how Flash’s tools work, do not buy this book. Nonetheless, if you have anything to do with multimedia design in general and Flash as a tool in particular, do not hesitate to buy Flash deConstruction: The Process, Design, and ActionScript of Juxt Interactive.
The owners and designers of Juxt Interactive, one of the best Flash design studios in the world, have taken the time to craft a book that succeeds on two levels. First, the book is a prime example, from cover to cover, of innovative and inspired design. Each page, image, section, and sidebar is thoughtfully laid out and concisely written.
Second, and unique to this book, we are given a peek behind the curtain to see how large Flash projects are handled in a multidesigner environment. Example scripts, tutorials, and how-tos based on experience make for fast learning and worthy reading. Many examples are taken from real-world projects, and there are chapters devoted to such important topics as Flash content management, innovative ActionScript navigation, and the Juxt Interactive process. Sprinkled throughout are interviews with top Flash designers, a list that reads like a Who’s Who of Web design: Hillman Curtis, Fred Sharples, Josh Olm, Glenn Thomas.
There are no flaws or drawbacks to this book save that it isn’t for the beginning Flash user, but even that isn’t entirely true. All beginning Flash users ought to have this book, even if they may have trouble understanding it–the images, interviews, and examples are inspiring and exciting. From all viewpoints–design, aesthetics, layout, and instruction–Flash deConstruction transcends the software and medium it discusses and exemplifies the quintessential book on design. –Mike Caputo
