Multimedia Institute has since 2000 set-up a variety of different lecture/discussion/presentation series dealing with its primary fields of interest [ie. digital arts, viagra 40mg activism, shop critical social thought, intellectual property rights etc.]. Some of those series like Becoming Digital, Caternetics, MaMa čita have in the meanwhile ceased to exist, and here we present just those modules still running which deal specifically with humanities and social sciences.

— PASTFORWARD

A group of five young intellectuals [Daniela Sestrić, Jakov Vilović, Tonči Valentić,Tom Medak and Petar Milat] decided in early 2000 to establish a informal and non-academic theoretical module within the Multimedia Institute. The name “past forward” originally designates a specific tone of the color blue, supposedly being retro-futurist.

That seems for us to be the perfect metaphor for a conceptual practice which aimed at opening new intellectual domains and – simultaneously – paying tribute to a specific philosophical and activist tradition in former Yugoslavia. We mean hereby the Praxis-group of philosophers and sociologists, but also the group of intellectuals gathered around the Zagreb-based magazine Arkzin in 1990ies.

For both of those groups a strong and effective critique of the parochial and localist discourse was of foremost importance, but neither Praxis nor Arkzin ever fell pray to a self-victimizing attitude. Both initiatives have – in contrary – introduced innovative ways of socially engaged thinking in the Yugoslav and Post-Yugoslav realm. Praxis meant a genuine and normatively inflected political anthropology, while Arkzin has been the primary source for a new kind of media-savy engagement.

To cut the story short: Pastforward from its beginning meant an eclectic, politically aware, media-oriented intellectual attitude.

Since 2000 main theoretical foci have remained the same: mixing-up Italian biopolitical philosophy, French post-deconstruction and Frankfurt-School-oriented normativism. At first sight an impossible theoretical combination, but which later on proved to be rather effective in the very own context. Never allowing to be dogmatic and short-sighted in regard of new and alternative emergencies.

This bastardized, philosophical wild-style was realized both in different on-going lecture & discussion series and also within the small, but for the Post-Yugoslav realm very decisive publishing activities [volumes so far published you'll find in the DOWNLOADS section].

In the local context Pastforward was always inclusive towards various students-initiatives or other groups of younger intellectuals and we have been a kind of incubator for those groups.

But our regional, Post-Yugoslav engagement was no less important and we early on sought active collaboration with some of the most important groups of intellectuals throughout the countries of former Yugoslavia. We shall especially emphasize our long-standing and extremely fruitful collaboration with the Belgrade Circle – our friends and comrades who have taught us a lot. Also we shall not forget our colleagues from Sarajevo from the Atelier for Philosophy, Social Sciences and Psychoanalysis who were always receptive to our own efforts, and – last, but not least – we also shall mention various groups around the Peace Institute from Ljubljana with whom we have collaboratd on various occasions in recent years.

— TRANSVERZALA

Transverzala was initiated in late 2005 by Vesna Vuković and Leonardo Kovačević as a lecture-series that promotes transversal knowledge production and new ways of political engagement. This lecture-series’ profile has been much influenced by French theory – more specifaclly by Jacques Ranciere’s thinking – and by such institutions like College internatioal de philosophie from Paris or eipcp [European institute for progressive cultural politics] from Vienna.

So far this programme hosted Oliver Marchart, Chantal Mouffe & Ernesto Laclau, Katja Diefenbach, Boyan Manchev, Artemiy Magun, Jodi Dean, Alberto Toscano, Eric Lecerf, Rado Riha & Jelica Šumič-Riha, Gerald Raunig, Tina Leisch, LIGNA-group, Stefan Nowotny

— VIZUALNI KOLEGIJ

Vizualni kolegij [Visual Collegium] has been initiated in 2004 within the project Swarm Intelligences with a purpose to open up new discursive domains within the field of visual and cinematic studies in Croatia. Our aim was to promote research on the rationality of image-production, taken from the perspective of an “expanded cinema”.

Main activities are regular bi-weekly screenings in MaMa, a continous multi-annual lecture-series and publication of theoretical texts. So far we have published two volumes: Alexander Garcia-Düttmann’s monograph on Visconti and Vizualni kolegij Reader.

Vizualni kolegij is coordinated by Tanja Vrvilo & Petar Milat.

Ima knjiga koje vas tjeraju da obznanite vlastitu poetiku, treat
i to ne onu spisateljsku već čitateljsku. Tako u ovom slučaju započinjem sa dva aksioma.

1. Kod značajnih, online
velikih autora njihove vam najbolje knjige mijenjaju život dok vas njihove samo dobre ostavljaju hladnima.

2. Za razliku od osrednjih pa čak i dobrih knjiga koje su podložne mijenama i različitim interpretacijama koje od tih istih djela doista svaki put iznova stvaraju nova djela, capsule
bitna djela – dakle ona koja vam mijenjaju život – uvijek su identična samima sebi, jedincata. Bitne knjige su uvijek iste i nepromjenljive a mijenjate se isključivo vi, čitatelji. Vaša pak preobrazba ne znači da se tim činom promjenilo i samo djelo koje vas je izazvalo da se promjenite – ono ostaje isto i kriterij njegove bitnosti jest u tome da se ono obraća zaista svakome u nakani da vam promjeni život. Slijedom toga se može reći da su jedino one ne-bitne knjige one o kojima možemo nešto znati i o kojima se može nešto uopće i reći dok su bitna djela ne-znatljiva i an-interpretabilna i ako ih se nekako uopće i može razaznati to je onda u uvijek heterogenim učincima, preobrazbama života, koje su izazvali.

Čitateljska poetika slijedom izloženog uvijek je transformativna praksa, nepodložna interpretaciji.
